Professor Jan Hartvigsen is an internationally leading researcher and research leader in musculoskeletal health. His focus is on improving care for people with musculoskeletal pain and disability and he aims to break down barriers between disciplines and bring together people from diverse backgrounds in productive collaborations.
He co-leads the Center for Muscle and Joint Health, a multidisciplinary center with 50+ researchers, that has a focus on prevention and better clinical management of musculoskeletal disease. For over 25 years I have also been teaching in various programs at the Faculty of Health at the University of Southern Denmark.
Jan Hartvigsen's clinical research has contributed significantly to our understanding of back pain and musculoskeletal pain and disability in populations, its causes, course, prognosis, and clinical management. He has published 400+ papers in international peer-reviewed journals including in the BMJ and The Lancet. He has been ranked among the top 0,1% within musculoskeletal pain and back pain for over 10 years in a row, and I was named the number 1 researcher in the world for musculoskeletal pain in 2017. His epidemiological and clinical research has been incorporated in many Danish and international reports and guidelines including the World Health Organization and Global Burden of Disease.
Jan Hartvigsen has co-established and is co-leading the Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark Program (GLA:D), a structured clinical program for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip and chronic back pain. The program is now in 12 countries (osteoarthritis) and 5 countries (back). He is also co-founder and mentor in Chiropractic Academy for Research Leadership, a global competitive mentorship program for early career researchers in musculoskeletal health. He has worked with industry partners in several projects noticeably the Horizon 2020 funded SelfBack project that developed a machine-learning-based application that supports self-management for people with back pain. he is an active communicator in Danish media with over 400 appearances in written, electronic, and internet media.
In 2020 Jan Hartvigsen was appointed Knight of the Order of Dannebrog by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for meritorious service to Denmark through research
