Research areas

My main research area is about the development of OECD test guidelines using fish and invertebrates for the detection of endocrine disrupters. I am employed until Dec. 2016 in a project financed by the Danish EPA where we evaluate molluscs species as candidates to be test organisms in different OECD guideline drafts. I am leading a Nordic research group funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The group coordinates the Nordic work on guidelines for detection of endocrine disrupters in fish and invertebrates. I am a member of the OECD Validation Management Group for Ecotoxicology (VMG-ECO) and the OECD Fish Drafting Group (FDG) as well as the OECD expert group on Fish Embryo Toxicity Test (FET) and the OECD mollusc expert group. Since 2013 I have been member of the European Chemical Agency (ECHA)Endocrine disrupter Expert group. In relation to basic research I am very interested in invertebrate endocrinology and especially mollusc endocrinology where there are many black boxes to be investigated. I am also involved in a new research area dealing with ballast water treatment and assessment. We try to validate new methods to verify the life/death of organisms treated with different techniques as UV-radiation, cavitation and ozonation that are used to remove potential invasive species from ships ballast water. In the laboratory I mostly work with fish and invertebrate experiments and the development and maintenance of immunochemical methods as e.g. ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay).
