Research information

My current research interests center around relations between language, culture and social organization as these relations are actualized in naturally occurring communication particularly within workplaces. Specifically I am working on 1) methodological issues concerning participatory design and language, 2) the role of texts in the practical accomplishment of organizational life, 3) the communicative situation for the hearing impaired, and 4) the notion of communicative competence as a function of situated practical activity. I work within an Ethnomethodological framework employing ethnography, Conversation Analysis and Membership Categorization Analysis. I also have a background in General and Anthropological Linguistics within which I am very fond of definite description, reference to collectivities and pragmatic inference.
