Research information

Dr. Burke is currently a Fellow of the JR Smallwood Foundation based at the International Politics Section and the Center for War Studies, Department of Political Science and Public Management. Her project explores the sealing industry and traditional practices in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and the role of the EU and international environmental non-governmental organizations in the stigmatization of sealing, sealers and their culture and traditions. The project examines themes of stigma, Indigenous rights, legitimacy, traditional economy and violence. Previously Dr. Burke was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow at SDU and affiliated with the School of Politics, Philosophy, International Relations and Environment (SPIRE) at Keele University in the United Kingdom. Her Marie Curie project explored non-governmental organization participation in Arctic diplomacy and politics, specifically the participation of environmental non/governmental organizations. Dr. Burke's research was also previously supported by a Carlsberg Foundation's Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Carlsberg project explored themes of identity politics, environmental politics, diplomacy dynamics, and international cooperation pressures in the Arctic region. Dr. Burke's holds a PhD in International Politics from the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University, a Master of Arts degree in Political Science and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Political Science with a minor in Business from Memorial University of Newfoundland.
