Personal profile

Research Interests

Dr. Khoshnevisan’s research focuses on quantitative sustainability assessment of technologies, products, and systems that support the transition towards circular, climate-neutral, and resource-efficient societies. He has more than 10 years of experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA), multi-criteria decision analysis, and sustainability modelling, with applications across renewable energy systems, biofuels, biorefineries, waste management, wastewater treatment, agricultural systems, food systems, and bio-based production.

His work integrates environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability to support science-based decision-making for industry, policy, and society. A central part of his research is the development and application of methods for Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD), Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), circular economy assessment, resource efficiency analysis, and climate change mitigation. He is particularly interested in evaluating trade-offs between environmental performance, economic feasibility, technological readiness, social impacts, and regulatory compliance.

Dr. Khoshnevisan leads the LCE SMART Research Team at the University of Southern Denmark, which focuses on smart resource management, sustainability assessment, circular economy, and data-driven decision-support approaches for sustainable transitions. More information about the team is available here: https://sdu-lce-smart.github.io/

His current research explores the role of digitalization, artificial intelligence, digital twins, data-driven modelling, and automated sustainability assessment in advancing next-generation LCA and environmental footprint tools. His recent and ongoing projects address topics such as AI-assisted LCA, digitalized waste management, sustainable biorefineries, bio-based materials, circular agriculture, green extraction technologies, Safe and Sustainable by Design materials and chemicals, and sustainability assessment of emerging technologies.

Through interdisciplinary approaches combining sustainability assessment, data mining, optimization, modelling, and decision-support methods, his research aims to provide robust and actionable insights for the design, evaluation, and implementation of sustainable solutions across biological, agricultural, industrial, and circular economy systems.
