Product Meaning and Design Evolution

My research interest lies in the intersection between innovation management, technology studies and consumer research. More specifically, I study the technological evolution of the hearing aid industry, in light of the cultural dimensions of hearing aid use. These cultural dimensions, such as the hearing aid symbolizing aging, handicap, dependence as well as an idea of the technology as intrusive on the body, have throughout the history of the hearing aid have acted as a considerable adoption barrier.

These barriers have been addressed by the industry through a broad array of innovations in terms of new technological features, designs and marketing initiatives. In light of the stigma related to hearing aid use, I will show how the technological evolution of the industry can be understood in light of these cultural dimensions related to perceptions in society of hearing aid use.
