Personal profile

Research areas

I am an Associate Professor of Literature, specializing in European cultural and intellectual history from about 1750 to the present. My main research interests are German literature, the history of ideas, and philosophy, especially in the period 1890-1945. I have also worked on issues in the history of science since the late eighteenth century, including the impact of German cultural and historical philosophy on American cultural anthropology, and the modern history of ideas in identity politics from Rousseau and Herder to the present. Other important areas of research for me are the cultural and literary history of war, with a focus on the First World War, as well as the early ecology movement and the German life reform movement, ca. 1880-1945.
