Dr. Alexander Dockhorn is an Associate Professor at the SDU Metaverse Lab and is working on artificial intelligence in games and its transfer to other applications.

Alexander Dockhorn’s research focuses on machine learning, decision-making, artificial intelligence in games, and game development. He is particularly fascinated by the learning capabilities of the human brain and is passionate about exploring algorithms for general AI. In his current research, he aims for more interpretable decision-making algorithms by the integration of causal reasoning. Further, he focuses on improving the efficiency of machine learning by automatic problem abstraction. 

After completing his dissertation, he held positions as a Junior Professor at Leibniz University Hannover and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Queen Mary University of London and Otto-von-Guericke University (OVGU) Magdeburg. At OVGU, he also studied computer science, including a term abroad at the University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland. From 2016 to 2020, he pursued his PhD at OVGU, working with the Computational Intelligence research group under the supervision of Prof. Rudolf Kruse and Prof. Sanaz Mostaghim.

He is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and previously served as the Chair of the IEEE CIS Games Technical Committee, with which he co-organized the IEEE Conference on Games 2024. Previously, he chaired several subcommittees on Summer Schools, Competitions, and other education activities, as well as being the main organizer of the Hearthstone AI competition.
