Current research areas and techniques: Organotypic brain slice cultures as experimental models for neurodegenerative disorders, and as a screening tool for neuroactive, trophic and toxic compounds, neurotoxicology, hippocampus, cortical development, in vivo and ex vivo electroporation, axonal tracing, FACS analyses, DNA microarrays, fluorescence microscopy, human embryonic stem cells and screening for developmental neurotoxicity. Offices: Peer-reviewer for international, primarily neuroscience scientific journals; reviewer for European (including EU FP5) and Nordic Funding Agencies and Ph.D. dissertation; member of EU working group in chronic toxicity in vitro; member of the Danish and European neuroscience societies, member and earlier chairman in Scandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology (SSCT). Supervision: Since 1988 co-suprevisor for 5 ph.d.-projects and more than 10 M.Sc. and medical research diploma projects. Innovative activity: Co-founder of NeuroScreen ApS, Odense, devoted to in vitro neurotoxicological screening. Director in NeuroScreen ApS from start in 1999 to 2004. Industrial collaboration: H. Lundbeck A/S, NeuroSearch A/S, KeyNeurotek (Gernmany). International collaboration: Has participated in two EU-framework funded research projects on 1) culturing brain slices on microelectrode arrays (1998-2000) and 2) organotypic brain slice cultures as alternative to animal experiments (ORCA, 2002-2004). Scientific publications: 29 scientific papers published peer review, more than 50 published conference abstracts.
