Research Interests:

Oral Literature and Ballads, particularly the formulaic narrative mode of ballads and folk songs.
Intercultural Communication (intercultural negotiation)


Select publications:

I earned my Danish Doctorate (dr.phil. – which is the ‘second’ doctoral degree in the Danish system, the Ph.D. being the first) in 1985 with the book Commonplace and Creativity. The Role of Formulaic Diction in Anglo-Scottish Traditional Balladry (Odense: Odense University Press) 404pp. The main bulk of my publications have fallen within the area of traditional (oral) literature, see for instance “Technique, Text and Context. Formulaic Narrative Mode and the Question of Genre”. In Joseph Harris, ed. The Ballad and Oral Literature, Harvard English Studies 17: 18-39 from 1991; and “’All There Is … As It Is’. On the Development of Textual Criticism in Ballad Studies”. Jahrbuch für Volksliedforschung 39: 28-40. from 1994.
But I have also published in other fields, e.g. interaction studies (see e.g. ”A Cross-Cultural View of Repetitions in Spoken Discourse”. Multilingua 12: 291-307 from 1993; and “Repetition and Conflict Management in Business Negotiation” In C. Bazzanella, ed. Repetition in Dialogue. (Tübingen: Max Niemeyer Verlag), pp. 1-15 from 1996.
In 2002 I co-authored (with an English colleague) Håndbog i engelsk [Handbook in English] with the major Danish publisher Politiken (375 pp).

In all author and editor of about 10 books; author of 30 articles.
