Description
The process of shared decision making (SDM) consists of collaboration between patients and clinicians, in exploring patient preferences and using the best available evidence, to make joint decisions on treatmentoptions. It is advocated for in healthcare as being a core component of patient centered care. It is particularly relevant in psychiatry where treatment decisions often are complex and preference-sensitive.
Despite being introduced at policy level and strongly endorsed, its’ implementation in clinical practice remains variable. This study explored clinicians’ perspectives and patient-reported experiences of SDM in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
