Background and general objectives

In July 2023 ESA’s EUCLID space-telescope was launched and has recently started its dedicated sky survey in routine observing mode. Over the six years the mission is going the space telescope aims to survey about 30% of the sky using two imaging instruments. The space mission is designed to explore the composition and evolution of the universe by monitoring galaxies up to a redshift of z = 2.0.

Classification of galaxies will have importance in generating accessible catalogues for class based extragalactic sources. The catalogues is helpful in categorising galaxies and will benefit subsequent follow-up observations with telescopes with the goal to obtain additional detailed astrophysical insights; especially the measurement of high-precision redshifts of a subsample of galaxies with special properties. The developed system could be applied to the first release of EUCLID data in 2025.

The scope of the project
This project aims to classify multiple galaxies by evaluate and compare two or more classification algorithms on a sample of SDSS galaxies or similar astronomical data archives. One algorithm could be a decision tree.
