Issues of trust and distrust are arguably central to a wide range of political interactions in the international system. But in what way can we use trust as a tool to understand international politics? What exactly does it mean ‘to trust’? How to different answers to this question lead us to different types of empirical explorations? This talk will use these questions as a starting point to discuss trust and distrust across a range of issue areas in political science and international relations: alliance politics, small state status seeking, the consequences of norm breaking, and NGO/donor relations.
