Whoever designed the PURE system did not know anything about how peer review works. The assumption here seems to be that a peer reviewer will only review articles, not books, that he/she always will recommend publication and that he or she will know when the pusblisher is going to put it out. Nonsense. I turn down half or more of what I am sent, and even when I recommend publication, as in this case, there is another reviewer, and an editorial committee. I have no idea whether it will ever be published or not. If it is published, it will certainly not be until 2010 at the earliest. So half of the peer review work I do will never have an ISBN number.
