Description

Part lecture, part dialog and part classical-music performance (both solo and duet), this session explores the dimensions of musical meaning and mastery on a variety of levels. The presenters bring 
parallel and interlocking backgrounds to their shared inquiry: one as a professional performer with philosophical interests, the other as a professional academic philosopher who is also an active classical 
musician. The presentation will include discussions of:  the interplay between verbal and non-verbal narrative; the ways in which the pedagogical approach espoused in Westney'sbook The Perfect Wrong Note relates to central notions of pragmatist philosophy, as well as how it  can release a performer's artistry; notions of authenticity in  music-making andphilosophy; and the relationship between language systems and the "ineffable."
