Description

Research into the development of new molecular receptors for the detection of explosives has received increased interest since 9/11 2001. A promising candidate for this is the tetrakis(tetrathiafulvalene)-calix[4]pyrrole receptor. The ability of this system to interact with nitro-aromatic compounds such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) produces a prominent color change from yellow to green (see figure). Since its discovery in 2004, we have worked on improving this system by enhancing properties like solubility, selectivity, sensitivity, and surface adhesion. Here, we present a quick overview of our recent research.
