Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

This paper examines the ramifications of the crusader conquests in the Levant on Latin intellectual culture (Latinitas) by focusing on the writings and translations of Stephen of Antioch. A Pisan scholar, Stephen seized on the intellectual opportunities offered by the crusader conquests in opening up new domains of knowledge to Latinity. The paper focuses on Stephen’s narrative explaining Latinity’s dearth of works on medicine and astronomy in comparison to the Greek and Arabic intellectual traditions and argues that Stephen sought to engage with a current discourse in Europe on the state of Latin learning.
