Honoring life with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – Experiences of patients and professionals with Interdisciplinary Telerehabilitation

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

Background
We developed an interdisciplinary cross-sectoral telerehabilitation intervention for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), named COPDLIFE. An eight-member interdisciplinary rehabilitation team offered COPDLIFE in six-month-long courses to fifteen people with COPD.
Methods
In a phenomenological-hermeneutic frame, we examined, what it meant to receive telerehabilitation for people with COPD and how the professionals experienced working on this. Observations and interviews were conducted with participants and focus group interviews were made with the professionals. Data underwent analysis inspired by the French Philosopher Paul Ricoeur.
Results
While participating in COPDLIFE people with COPD had markedly high rehabilitation attendance. They felt well-supported by a respectful, engaged, and broadly skilled rehabilitation team that helped them manage their individual and complex challenges. This leads them to enhanced physical and social activity and improved well-being. The professionals experienced the intervention to pave the way for an excellent team-play that provided holistic and individually based rehabilitation, bringing the everyday life of people with COPD to a better level.
Conclusion
COPDLIFE shape relational coordinated care, allowing high-quality holistic rehabilitation. Participants undergo healthy transitions because they become far more capable of mastering the role of living with COPD. The professionals found a new and appreciated platform to collaborate across sectors and professions and hereby play each other better and professionally proud with a focus on supporting people with COPD. COPDLIFE leads to individually supportive rehabilitation that brings back the honor of the lives of people with COPD. With such solutions, healthcare resources can be freed.
