Flensbourg: A Border City with Many Histories

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

Flensburg has only been a border city since 1920 as the border between Denmark and Germany left it just south of the border on the German side. Being the biggest and wealthiest city of Schleswig, both nationalities claimed her to be theirs. Both sides told their own history about the past and the identity of Flensburg, and they constructed parallel narratives with different sights and monuments. This is even more striking as it happened in a city without a national - Danish or German - past, but a long history as a regional centre in a mixed region.
