"We must not forget that the social sciences are historically rooted in bringing forth the contribution of society's active participants to the process of reorganising institutions. In fact, the social sciences got established by developing a conceptual system that enabled us to analyse that which could not be analysed earlier, given the fact that we were hidebound by the necessity of complying with holy scripture. Following on from the religious crisis of the 16th century it became possible to think of Church and State as institutions; this was a vital breakthrough, not only for understanding social phenomena but also for developing political action.
