Abstract
What it the welfare state and how has the concept been studied in Africa? The welfare state must be understood broadly to entail not only social policies, but also social policies’ interrelation with economic and political conditions. There have been attempts to identify welfare state regimes and to provide theoretical explanations to welfare state development in the Global South broadly, and in Africa specifically. However, welfare state studies have lost out to the narrow focus on social protection, which may contribute to mis-guided understandings of, and solutions to, broad-based and inclusive development.
