Abstrakt

Increasing complexity together with shortening lifecycles makes product
and production lifecycle processes more challenging than ever for industries.
Virtual prototyping (VP) technologies promise a viable solution to handle such
challenges in terms of reducing time, physical builds and increasing quality. In
this paper, we present the design and development methods of a digital twin (DT)
based virtual factory (VF) solution for concurrent design, simulation and optimization
of product and production models for a blade manufacturing plant of Vestas
Wind Systems A/S. First, the proposed solution is developed by integrating
3D factory and product models with immersive and interactive 3D VR simulation
technology. Second, real-time bidirectional data synchronization between virtual
models and physical production systems is enabled via the manufacturing execution
system (MES). The study shows that DT based integrated VF simulations
provide immersive virtual environments, which allow users to manage complex
product and production systems as well as significant cost saving. Finally, we
discuss and present possible business cases for the proposed solution based on
the capabilities of Industry 4.0 technologies.
