Abstract

This research paper explores the challenges associated with older adults’ use of aging technologies, particularly outdated computers and smartphones, and the subsequent implications for their well-being. It addresses two primary research questions: (1) What are the primary challenges and implications for the well-being of older individuals using outdated technologies? (2) How does fear of data breaches affect older adults’ use of digital health technologies? The study examines how concerns regarding data security influence older adults’ software management practices and their reliance on support from relatives and care professionals in navigating digital health systems. Additionally, it argues that technology maintenance is a crucial aspect of the domestication process as both users and their devices age. Finally, the paper highlights the importance of considering the social aspects of technology use and maintenance during the design and testing of digital health systems aimed at older populations.
