In this contribution, a stakeholder performance model which internalizes theoretical constructs like teamwork quality, personal impact factors and institutional setting of teams will be presented. The investigation of ten team cases within rural development is challenging the idea that stakeholder participation is leading per se to better performance. Considerable leadership efforts but also efforts of the involved stakeholders are requirements for fruitful teamwork in regional development projects. Contrary to classical teamwork, strict leadership of stakeholder teams stemming from various backgrounds is not recommendable. Instead, an approach which focuses on dialog and team interaction is needed. Explorative empirical findings show a positive impact of teamwork quality on stakeholder participation and performance. Individual impact factors seem to work as a mediating effect among teamwork quality and stakeholder participation. Methodologically, this study indicates that participation as a theoretical construct needs to better incorporate the aspect of dialog and of creating common ground among the stakeholders.
