Abstract
This paper examines whether firms are able to create and appropriate economic value from their human capital resources in a study of 3,033 Danish manufacturing firms. The study provides empirical evidence that firms can create value from external acquisition and internal development of workers’ skills but also that these policies are substitutes. The study provides important evidence regarding strategic management of human capital resources and the long standing debate regarding the roles of strategic factor markets and internal development of resources.
