    Abstract

By analysing the well known Melite episode in Achilles Tatius' /Leucippe and Clitophon/, this paper shows how the novel's section is construed by referring to the hypotext of the myth of Tantalus. Moving from a close reading of the text, the article highlights hitherto disregarded structural symmetries marking Achilles Tatius' narrative structure. The paper also contends that the label of gender-reversal is at times misleading, especially if used in a simplistic manner, and that the Melite episode in particular mobilises also other sets of ethical and social expectations.
