Abstract

Promoting healthier food purchases in supermarkets presents a multifaceted set of both opportunities and challenges. Supermarkets can play an important role in promoting healthier food choices and thus impact public health positively. They can influence consumer behavior by utilizing their vast customer base, forming strategic alliances, and motivating their workforce. Effective strategies include food reformulations, pricing, and promotions. However, these tactics are often also used by large food and beverage corporations to boost overall sales, especially those of unhealthy products. This necessitates a strategy that aligns business goals with health priorities. By implementing comprehensive interventions across individual, social, environmental, and policy levels, supermarkets can support sustainable healthy eating practices and long-term health benefits.
