    Abstrakt

Americans have used a range of narratives to make sense of their settlement and use of natural resources. This article focuses on narratives of environmental degradation after the United States passed legislation mandating the cleanup of toxic sites and provided a Superfund for that purpose. Three communities are presented as case studies: Picher, Oklahoma; Libby, Montana, and Love Canal, New York.
