Abstract
This chapter extends semiotics by scrutinizing a major limitation
that besets sign theory: a theory of this kind will all too often emphasise
synchronistic processes or, in other traditions, pure relations. Such a focus
overlooks how human skills and social practices inform semiosis. In
pursuing this matter, the chapter gives close attention to languaging and
argue that ‘pure relations’ are, in fact, diachronic constructs; they derive
from a history of observing that draws on linguistic resources.
