    Abstract

The chapter will explore the security risks associated with the fact that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has an economy which is highly interconnected with the global market: on the supply side, as a supplier of petroleum and various services to the international market and on the demand side, for goods, services and manpower to meet the needs of the domestic market. As such, the UAE is highly susceptible to fluctuations in the global economy which poses a number of risks to its economy and thus to the political stability of the country. A higher degree of economic diversification is one way to reduce this type of risk.
