Abstract
Psychosocial Nursing Care in a High Tech Critical Care Unit – A Study of Psychosocial Nursing in Encounters -between the Awake Intubated Patient and the Critical Care Nurse
Modern technology and new ways of treating and caring for the ventilated patient have implied a change in the need for nursing. The aim of this study was to gain deeper understanding of the psychosocial care in the encounter between the awake intubated patient and the critical care nurse. In a Danish high tech critical care unit, 44 hours of participant observation were conducted. Three critically ill, intubated patients and eight critical care nurses were included in the study. Data were analysed and interpreted using a Ricoeur inspired interpretation strategy. Three themes emerged: contact, information and interaction. The findings suggest that there is a divergence between the nurse's intentions and actions in the encounter that may lead to the patient's psychosocial needs being overlooked, despite the fact that the nurse considers this to be the basis of professional nursing. Further research would develop a richer picture of such encounters.
