Abstract ERS 2018
Patient perspectives and experience on the diagnostic pathway of lung cancer – a qualitative study
Author: Helle Marie Christensen
Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Mortality is high and burden of symptoms significant. Assessment of the perceived quality of life is considered important during treatment but also during the diagnostic process owing to the high mortality of lung cancer. Knowledge and attention related to patients’ perspectives, patients’ experiences with, and expectations to the lung cancer diagnostic pathway are limited.
Aim and objectives
To contribute with knowledge of patients’ experience and patient-assessed quality of lung cancer diagnostic pathway
To develop new management strategies for clinical practice in the lung cancer diagnostic pathway based on patients and health professionals' perspectives on practice
A qualitative study comprising field observation following 20 patients during first visit of the lung cancer diagnostic pathway also semi-structured interviews with 19 patients were conducted. Data was analysed in collaboration with health professionals from the clinical practice looking for possibilities for developing management strategies based on patient’s perspectives.
Patients' described the diagnostic pathway as being affected by anxiety for the possibility of lung cancer diagnosis. The fear inhibited reception of information and changed their previous abilities. Although the patients were affected by anxiety, they still wanted the diagnostic path to be as fast as possible. The patient expressed the need for help from the nearest network, multiple levels and repeated information to cope with the diagnostic pathway.
The patients’ perspective provided insight into the need for focus on anxiety, network involvement and focus on implementing different types of information.
