Abstract

How do we create positive environmental behavior via tourism? We create positive environmental behavior by letting the tourist engage in active tourism experiences in the nature with communication about the nature – and we make sure that the communication does not overrule the flow in the experience. Studies show that knowledge about environmental problems do not necessary result in positive environmental actions. To act we need an intention. The intention to act is constructed from personal factors; attitudes, locus of control and personal responsibility, and from knowledge about the problems and action strategies – besides the situational factors. To create an intention to act the cause need to have a value for the individual. How do we create value? Through experiences. By creating ten guidelines from adult learning didactics and experience theory in a tourism context we add a tool for developing experiences with learning instead of experiences and learning. We focused on guide facilitated active nature experiences; kayak, riding, mountain biking, hiking etc. The ten guidelines focus on what the facilitator can do to create valuable experiences with learning.
1. Communicate in a way that makes the tourists undergo a process
2. Help the tourists sustain the experience by translating it into words
3. Help the tourists discovering the shades of the nature through their senses
4. Hand over different areas of responsibility
5. Retain small groups
6. Respect the flow-experience
7. Use storytelling and act
8. Remember the four roles of the guide; leader, mediator, resource manager and facilitator of act
9. Always have flexible tourist tours ready
10. Aim for nature value for the tourists by taking in account nature ethics in every choice
