title = "Multiple Perspectives on Imprisonment in Europe",
abstract = "At present, there are over 1.6 million prisoners in Europe and conditions in European prisons vary widely. In 2010, the European Society of Criminology{\textquoteright}s Working Group on Prison Life and the Effects of Imprisonment was established. In this working group scholars from over 20 different countries aim to encourage prison research in Europe. These academics meet twice a year to discuss a variety of prison-related topics. This article brings together some of the contributions to its meeting in Denmark in April 2016. In this paper a selection of timely prison research from a variety of European countries, each with their own specific prison context, is presented. The contributions included highlight a range of opportunities to improve the conditions of confinement and rehabilitative efforts, and to reduce recidivism after release from prison.",
