This chapter explores literary manipulation as a multimodal phenomenon. This is done by examining how the illusion of verisimilitude is constructed in J. J. Abrams and Dough Dorst’s novel S. (2013) by multimodal means that position the reader as someone facing an old library book with handwritten notes in the margins and miscellaneous material inserted between the pages. Methodologically, the chapter is situated within multimodal stylistics, which aims to broaden the analytical scope of stylistics to handle semiotic modes such as images, typography, layout and colour as systematically and consistently as more traditional branches of stylistics handle wording. After surveying the wide range of multimodal features employed in Abrams and Dorst’s novel, the chapter narrows its analytical focus to typographic meaning-making. Through analysis, it is demonstrated how different typographic choices made in S. contribute to the meaning of “old library book with handwritten notes in the margins” that is absolutely central to the novel and how the various typographic signifiers at the same time also realise meanings such as “elusive”, “gothic”, “mysterious”, “male” and “female”. The concepts employed for analysis are those of ‘typographic distinctive features’, ‘typographic semiotic principles’ and ‘modality’.
