Issues of Meaning and Interpretation Rasied by Diagetic versus Non-diagetic Use of Music in Television and Film. When music occurs in the soundtrack of a film or television show, it can either be attributed to a source within the narrative, so that the characters can hear it, or it can be "background" music, available to the viewer, but not to the characters. In this presentation, we will explore the complex of issues related to meaning and interpretaiton raised by diagetic v non-diagetic use of music in television and film. Matters to be addressed include: How is it of significance to the interpretation of a scene whether or not music is used diagetically or non-diagetically? How important is the role of the presence or absence of a musical soundtrack to a correct understanding of a scene? Is it of consequence whether or not the music is written specifically for a scene or is antecedently available to the public as recorded music? Will the increasing fragmentation - bordering on balkanization - of shared public musical experience now on the rise due to increasingly differentiated listening venues and internet sites result in a growing impoverishment of audience ability to appreciate - and even to understand! - cinema and television narratives within an adequate intermedial context? Finally, to what extent do we structure the narrative of our own lived experience by means of a "soundtrack" wherein elements of diagetic and nondiagetic use of music are present?
