High-resolution C13 NMR investigation of the metal-semiconductor transition in an organic conductor

Abstrakt

Resolved resonances for the carbon sites in the tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene (TMTSF) molecule of the organic conductor (TMTSF)2ReO4 have been observed as a function of temperature between 350 and 150 K. Continuous variations of the resonance positions are observed when the temperature is decreased down to 182 K, at which temperature the system exhibits a structural transition, leading to a semiconducting state. We report the first observation in direct space of the collapse of the conduction-electron density at a metal-semiconductor transition.
