Abstrakt

To situate the skills of the textile designer within theHCI-process, we present a case of a hand puppet with apurpose-woven smart textile pattern. The qualitiesfound in traditional textile design are tacitly synthesizedinto the eTextile-design process. We see this mentalityas having a natural dialogue with HCI-practice. Thehand puppet consists of two layers: an inner sensorglove, designed to detect the movements of the user’sfingers, and a woven outer layer that has a touchsensitive user interface integrated into its wovenstructure. The two interfaces can be operatedsimultaneously by two separate users; an adult and achild. Our interest is to understand better how thetraditional textile design variables can be utilized in theuser interface and -experience design. We aim towardsthe synthesis of woven eTextile design, consisting ofuser interface design, pattern design, sensor structuredesign and textile layout design.
