Energy loss of charged particles to molecular gas targets

    Abstrakt

    The energy-loss spectrum of fast charged particles penetrating a dilute molecular gas target has been analyzed theoretically, with a homogeneous gas mixture in the state of complete dissociation as a reference standard. It is shown that the geometrical structure of molecules causes the energy-loss straggling and higher moments over the energy-loss spectrum to be greater than the corresponding quantities for a completely dissociated gas of equal composition. Such deviations from additivity are shown to be most pronounced at energies around the stopping-power maximum. Supporting evidence is found in the experimental literature.
