Abstract
Background
The Council of the European Union has recently issued a call to promote, recognize and reward open science, as the open
research is perceived as a mechanism to strengthen research integrity and as a driving force for quality in science and societal impact. Likewise
comes the recently formed collaboration, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (COARA), with a number of calls in their agreement 'The
COARA Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment’. Here, institutions are encouraged to develop and evaluate new tools, processes and
assessment criteria for open research that can help to increase awareness, inform politicians and reward researchers.
The OADO metric
We present the work to develop a new metric, which we call "OADO". It is named after the production it evaluates:
Open Access (OA), Open Data (OD) and Open Outreach (OO). The metric consists of two factors: one factor indicating the degree of OA and OD in research; and
a factor indicating the degree of OO in dissemination articles. OADO has been developed and adapted to Elsevier's RIMS product, Pure, which is widely used in DK. Opposite
other metrics, such as the h-index, which only increases independently of the researcher's activity, OADO is calculated over a five-year period, and reflects the researcher's
recent practice and may increase or decrease depending on the researcher's activity.
