Abstract
Purpose: Drawing from resource-based theorising, the concept of network embeddedness and a process perspective on entrepreneurship, this paper establishes a framework to explain a multi-level and multi-locational network embeddedness of creative-artistic entrepreneurs in non-urban places. It thereby challenges stylised facts about creative-artistic entrepreneurship as a predominantly urban phenomenon.
Design/methodology/approach: Based upon the conceptual framework, we establish four research propositions that will subsequently be contextualised by means of an illustrative case study which illustrates the inter-relatedness of resource exchanges and multiple network embeddedness levels achieved by creative-artistic entrepreneurs in a non-urban place. Our context is creative professions on the Norwegian Lofoten Islands, a rural-remote, yet highly creative, non-urban location.
Findings: The conceptual paper derives a fine-grained understanding about how creative-artistic entrepreneurship emerges and develops in non-urban places and contributes to a better understanding of how such places can nurture creative-artistic entrepreneurship through multiple network embeddedness and resource-exchange configurations.
Originality: The paper uses both an original conceptual framework and original field research (2019).
Research limitations/implications: The article will enable further empirical research that tests, validates and, if necessary, refines the framework established.
Practical and social implications: Creative-artistic entrepreneurs should use various resource-exchange combinations with networks to become locally embedded. Public-policy managers need to be aware of the variety of these network embeddedness configurations that may exist with such entrepreneurs in non-urban places to support this type of entrepreneurship and develop the location through resource provisions.
