Abstract

The health systems, healthcare expenditure models, and health outcomes vary considerably across the World Health Organization (WHO) Europe Region. This chapter illustrates some of the drug utilization research (DUR) communities across WHO Europe. It presents a list of communities across Europe supporting general DUR. The chapter presents a case study on Danish health system and Estonian health care system. The Danish National Prescription Registry is the most important data source for DUR and holds individual-level data on all medicines dispensed at Danish community pharmacies since 1995. The Estonian State Agency of Medicines is responsible for the supervision of the pharmaceutical sector and medicines in Estonia as well as promoting the rational use of medicines. Patient-level anonymized data about prescription medicines is administered by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. All patients have a unique personal identification number within the Estonian health system.
