The Athenians celebrated Dionysus as the god of wine and the theatre, and though records show that the dionysiac worshiping stretches far back in history, Dionysus was to remain a new god, the arriving god. His linkage with wine gives him a pivotal role in the fabric of Greek comedy, both directly on the stage and thematically. In comedy, the god’s darker aspects are hidden in favour of more positive and jolly aspects.
