Abstract
Across the curriculum, dialogic teaching has been advocated for in educational research and practice for decades, and the field has steadily grown. This chapter links the ideals and aims of dialogic teaching with the conception of Bildung in cross-disciplinary teaching. It outlines what dialogic teaching is, presents the reasons for choosing dialogic teaching approaches, describes the ideals shared across traditions, and provides examples of dialogic teaching strategies and tools in practice. It also touches on questions concerning evaluation in dialogic teaching and commonly encountered challenges in creating dialogic learning environments in practice. A dialogic teaching approach from the tradition of philosophy with children is used to exemplify the theoretical arguments; the chapter contains examples of both a teacher’s guide for dialogic activity, examples of advice to promote dialogue, and ideas for elements that can be used to evaluate dialogue quality.
