With the change of speed and complexity of tomorrows services and processes the role of design-actors stands before thrilling challenges. We build this chapter on our long-time experiences with managing and designing innovation and change processes in settings stretching from global operating commercial organizations over national policymaking units to small and local institutions in a public service arena. Our professional practice represents a broad point of departure as we have experience with design processes “from the inside” as permanently employed and “from the outside” as both consultants, advisors and researcher.

We argue that core tasks in design-thinking and design-doing are changing radically with expanding complexity. And we aim this chapter towards the designers working in areas characterised by needs of organisational transformation. To succeed with future transformation of organizations we suggest a change in the landscape and the role of the transformation-designer – emphasizing the designer’s ability to initiate and carry on continuous dialogue and interaction with organizations, stakeholders and users as completely necessary in the act of design. This focus on the tranformation-designer’s ability to interact, proposes an additional set of capabilities and new ways of understanding the design-process in relation to legitimacy and sustainable organizational implementation.
