Abstract

The rules and practices related to death investigation in the Nordic countries are reviewed. There are more similarities than differences. In some countries, for financial reasons, the police are reluctant to request medicolegal autopsies. External examination of the dead may substitute for an autopsy. The need to establish death with absolute certainty is emphasized in the legislation. The rules are similar for the reporting of unexpected and non-natural deaths.
