Abstract
ENGLISH:
The rise of consumerism in healthcare during the last 50 years has profoundly reshaped the field of healthcare and given birth to the health consumer. In this chapter, after reviewing selected extant consumer literature on how health is consumed and prosumed and how this affects the relation between medical authority and consumer autonomy, we recapitulate the essential ideas of health capital as a theoretical framework for understanding the construction of individual health through a Bourdieusian perspective. We reflect on how health capital could be applied by consumer researchers to investigate contemporary phenomena in healthcare, summarizing the insights in a capital-based tentative framework model of health consumption.

Dans le prolongement de cette pensée, Anna Schneider-Kamp et Soren Askegaard offrent une discussion théorique sur la notion de capital santé. Le chapitre 3 commence par dresser un constat des différentes formes de responsabilisation du patient exposées dans la littérature. Les auteurs proposent une vision nuancée et plurifactorielle du processus de consommation de la santé et de la construction du consommateur de santé à travers la notion de capital santé inspirée par plusieurs courants théoriques et notamment bourdieusien. Le capital santé englobe les ressources dont dispose le patient permettant de se positionner dans le champ social de la santé, mais la manière dont ces générale ressources sont aussi influencées et déterminées par des structures comme les autorités médicales.
