This article sets off from the classical question: What is literature? Drawing on Bruno Latour’s concept of instauration I try to find my way between constructivist and essentialist notions. In line with not least work by Rita Felski, I argue that literature in order to exist has to be used. In fact, any reading, close reading not excepted, is a kind of taking without owner’s consent – which is the Danish title and the key concept of the article. This way of looking at things raises questions about the relation between theory and method as well as questions concerning the difference between use and abuse which are of relevance for not least the kind of use termed literary studies.
