"Internationalisation", "profile building" and "marketing" are buzzwords of modern university management. With "Denmark", "the North" and "the Baltic Sea region", Kiel University has focused on a space with positive public connotations in its contacts abroad since 1945, although much of the cultivation of relationships took place on an individual-personal level and was not always provided with a budget. Through the selection of sources and the combination of historical-critical methodology with current tools of university management, the author presents the formation of an interdisciplinary and inter-faculty international focus of a university in the socio-political interplay of the post-war period in West Germany, the division of Germany and the end of the Cold War.
