Resumé

The restructuring of the Danish pork industry has been characterized by three major merger waves in the period 1960 to 2010 resulting in 43 mergers and acquisitions (M&As). The industry restructuring was largely dominated by horizontal M&A strategies in contrast to alternative consolidation strategies; predominantly caused by a response to economic and/or technological pressures rather than strategic motivated rationale. The outcomes of the M&A activities were generally positive in the sense that the expected cost synergies and the planned rationalizations (divestments and closures) were overall realized. A few numbers of mergers, however, were unsuccessful due to inefficiencies in implementing the mergers as well as internal conflicts of interest. Cooperative ownership outperformed privately ownership of the industry. Industrial organization explanations, resource-based and agency theory explanations are discussed as the main determinants of industry restructuring of the Danish pork industry.
